For the new modern mums out there…..?
Do you still use hand knitted garments for your babies or do you think its too old fashioned??
We have a tradition in our family for knitting, my grandma did for my little sisters and me, then my mum did, and they both taught me and now im doing a few items for my friend
Does anyone have any patterns for simple blankets and hats/bonnets aswell please??
Of course! I am 24 and crochet. We do not have any traditions or anything, but my son likes getting a new scarf and I make blankets. I have tried knitting, but I have only made a scarf once. I am going to keep at both and I hope to teach my kids. So no it is not old fashioned in my opinion ^^;
There is a link below to a plethora of baby related knitting patterns and one I think is cute and is rated easy.
I think its a great tradition I did it for my girls for a keepsake. I wish i could help but all i know how to do is blankets! best of luck!

If it was a tradition in my family I would use them.

I still use hand knitted garments, and I have learned to knit myself – I’m 30. If you key in "free knitting patterns", you will get a wide range of websites to view. John lewis sells really nice modern patterns. I think hand knitted items are far prettier than of the rail.

I think the fact its old fashioned makes it more trendy!
I had loads of cardigans, blankets, booties, hats etc made more my baby girl… to be honest though, she’s only worn a few of the cardies, bonets, and blankets… I had soooo much stuff and some of it was horrible (terrible I know but its true), I’ve given lots of mine away to charity shops, but I love and am keeping some of it!
P.S, I think its great that your doing some for a friend… thats great! And I wish I could knit!!

It doesn’t matter if it’s old-fashioned or not. What matters is that it’s a family tradition. A child needs the support family traditions will give him/her. And if it’s a present for a friend, I don’t see why they wouldn’t appreciate it. It’d be ugly if they didn’t–you put a lot of time and effort into making their child something special from your family.
Just relax and find something nice. I tend to find that children love simple things, and I know I absolutely adored my knitted blanket when I was little. If your friend doesn’t like it, her child certainly will.

knitted things are great and show that a baby is really loved! plus i find them alot warmer then bought things!
what else is great are booties and knitted mittens especially to keep the hands warm even during the day or night in bed, the cotton scratch mits dont have much warmth in them

I am 30 years young with 2 kids and number 3 on board. I had hand knits for both of mine and will do for this baby too. There are loads of knitting patterns free online and Debbie Bliss pattern books are really modern.

I think giving handmade gifts is completely acceptable, and almost less worriesome (with the concern of lead in children’s items). I think what truly makes a hand-knitted or crocheted item more "modern" is the textile used, and to a lesser extent, the pattern. Cottons, especially organic, bamboos, and wools are especially sought after because they wear well and are almost always easily tolerable by baby skin.
A lot of yarn companies offer free patterns through their stores. I particularly like these:
