Comments on: Does anyone remember plastic foldup rain bonnets? Did you wear them as a child or later? Anyone still do?

I remember my older sister and her friends wearing them in the early ’70’s… it seems in recent years that they have become "uncool" for those ladies under the age of 50. My wife,
who isn’t that old, has a couple stashed away, and uses them
when the weather is crappy. I read recently that they are
bcoming more acceptable again in fashion circles, in fact,
you can see women of all ages wearing them in bigger cities
like NYC.

I lived in England for a couple of years in the middle of high school in the 70s. The girls school up the road from mine (a distinctly odd place in many ways, we had almost nothing to do with them socially) made their girls wear them over their school hats in wet weather. The girls hated them, especially because wearing them over their school hats made them useless and they looked ridiculous. But some girls used to take their school hat off to put their rain hat back on at the ‘home’ end of the trip, and with their blue macs they looked quite nice.

This was also the era of convenient, fold-up umbrellas in really bright cheerful colors. These brollies, which most girls loved, (and saw their first one as a bit of a right of passage as I recall, maybe like Kareliz) most likely ‘killed off’ the rain hat as much as anything, or relegated it to ‘emergency use only’ status. Forcing teenagers to wear them wouldn’t have helped either.

i remember them. i see older ladies wearing them. they still sell them at walmart. and i never wore one.

I remember them well. My Mom, Aunts, and Grandmother used to wear them. I had one that was kept in my coat pocket just in case I needed it. It had it's own little case to put it into too.

Here in the southern U.S. all our Grandmothers had one of those in her purse. The only place I see them any more is at funeral homes. They sometimes pass them out when it is raining.

yeah my grandmother used to make me wear them. she always had like 5 in her purse. i thought they were the coolest things ever and liked to play with them in church. i would NEVER wear one now!! LOL!

Yes, my mother "forced" them on me until I was about 10 years old. I still see them in the dollar stores and no! I never made my kids wear them.
