what kind of hats did people wore in 1830s..were they big,wide ?

why did they wore such a big hats …is there a difference between bonnets and hats,…why did they use ribbon to tie big bonnets…plzz help me..

People wore hats in those days for other reason than fashion – although that was the reason the upper classes wore hats.

For centuries the people in Northern Europe have worn head coverings to keep their head dry when the weather was wet and for shade when the weather was warm. It left their hands free to work, and kept in body heat when the weather was cold.

In the 1830’s men wore hats rather than use an arm to carry an umbrella. Cowboy hats were very wide brimmed to offer the wearer this protection.

For fashion’s sake upper class women wanted pale white skin, so skin protection was considered extremely important. So various type of hats outdoor for women sprang into existence. Lower class women wore hats more for protection from the rain and to keep their hands free for other chores.

Bonnets were worn only by women and had high "pokes" (the part that actually covered the top of the head). The sunbonnets worn by American Women when crossing the prairies, had fabric "pokes" which could be handmade at home.

As for ribbons, satin ribbons for tying bonnets are only for fashion, (they don’t stay tied, I know, I’ve tried) grosgrain ribbon stays tied better. Cotton ties work even better.

My favourite character is the Demoman I play as him only. I have the scottish resistance the eyleander the targe n charge and everything except for that one hat the glengarry bonnet. So if you know any way of getting it please tell me, Thank you have a good day.

You can craft 127 weapons and make one, or you just wait. They drop randomly, they have a .08% chance of dropping for you every few hours or so. Otherwise, it’s a random weapon.

How to wear a hat without looking like a freak?

I’ve recently fell in love with hats. I love big pretty hats, bonnets, fedoras, female bowler hats etc. I’m 19 so how can I wear these hats without looking like a freak of nature? I’m a university student and I’m not rich so I can’t get away with the "Haute couture look" Also where can I buy inexpensive fedorah hats?

If your hair is long, I find it’s best to wear hats with curls or waves. they flow out from the bottom and give good balance. Plus, it’s very feminine.

Free Sewing Pattern for old fashion Night-Cap?

I am looking for a free Sewing Pattern for Night-Cap? Not the bonnet type, but the kind that looks like a Santa-hat. I can find crochet and knitting, but want to sew one of material?

Measure the circumference of your head (or the wearer’s head) in the position it will be worn. Divide that in two… let’s say your measurement is 22" — divided by 2 is 11".

Draw an isoceles triangle on a sheet of newspaper with the base of the triangle 11" (head measurement/2). Make the height of the triangle something that pleases you.

Add seam allowance to the sides of the triangle… 3/8" to 5/8" would be conventional. Draw straight lines 1.5" and 2" below the base of the triangle. Those will be the hem of the cap.

Cut out your newspaper pattern. Fold the hem portion of the pattern up, folding 1/2" under. Take your scissors and cut the folded hem along the lines for the sides of the triangle. Unfold. You’ve got your
pattern.

Cut 2 pieces, with the base of the isoceles triangle along the crossgrain of the fabric (very important… wovens stretch more on the crossgrain than the lengthwise grain). Sew the side seams; press. Turn up the hem, press. Wear.

The reason you’re not finding much in the way of patterns for wovens is that they tend to slip off at night. Some old timers had earflaps and strings to tie under the chin of their flannel nightcaps.
