What Some People Throw Away, Others Can Use
This relates directly back to the movie Dark Days when Greg says, “what people throw away, other people can use.” To those featured in Dark Days, the concept of trash was almost not existent. In the article, Hooks further illustrates the lifestyle difference as she interacts with her classmates at college noting, “At Stanford, my classmates wanted to know me… They invited me on the expensive vacations and ski trips I could not afford.” The difficulty faced by Hooks in her school experience and that faced by many who are transcending the socioeconomic status as they progress through to college is the ability to socially and emotionally adapt to their new surroundings in a manner that allows them to receive the full benefit of schooling but still allows them to remain grounded in their humble beginnings.
