The country of Samoa in the South Pacific started out as Western Samoa. From 1914 to 1962, Samoa was occupied by New Zealand.
It is the first Polynesian nation to get independence. In 1997 the country dropped the “Western” from its name and became Samoa.
Located halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand, Samoa has a total area of about 2,800 square kilometres (1,740 square miles) and is a little bit smaller than the state of Rhode Island. It has over 400 kilometres (250 miles) of coastline.
There rainy season goes from November to April with the rest of the year being relatively dry.
