Individual vs. Group Health Insurance Plans
There are a few differences between an individual health insurance policy and the group plan that employee groups have. The obvious difference is that with an individual health insurance policy, you are the only one dealing with the insurance company.
With a group health insurance policy, the group all deals with the same insurance company. The premiums per head are very likely cheaper than the individual health insurance policy. The premiums cover the costs with a little profit for the insurance company.
Also the risks are spread over the group of members. Group health insurance plans often cover things that would be prohibitively expensive on an individual basis. The only way this is feasible is because of the purchasing power of the group.
